Jasmine flower is the most ancient and important crops grown on commercial scale in certain areas of India.Jasmine contains highly fragrant and mostly use in various purposes like as making garlands, bouquet, decorating hair of women, religious offering and so many.It also uses in cosmetic and perfumery industries.All over Indian about 80 jasmine species are found but all of them only three specie are grown commercially.The three commercially usable jasmine species are Jasminum sambac (Gundumalli / Madurai Malli), J. auriculatum (Mullai) and J. grandiflorum (Jathimalli / Pitchi).Now are discussed about jasmine cultivation.
Soil And Climate
At first we have to know which type of soil are suitable for jasmine flower cultivation.Jasmine grows well in light soils.A loamy soil is the best.Although they are grown in heavy clay soils in some places, yields are high only in loams.Simply we may say it grows up well in well drained rich sandy loam soils.The ideal conditions for successful cultivation are warm summer with ample water supply and sunny days.
Land Preparation
It needs one or two primary ploughs to remove the weeds from the land which is followed by digging of pits at a size of 30 cubic centimeter.
Irrigation
It requires immediate irrigation should be given and subsequent irrigation at an interval of seven to ten days depending upon the weather conditions and soil type.
Fertilizer
we have been recommended to you that each plant should be given approximately 10 kg of FYM and 60 kg of Nitrogen and 120g each of phosphorous and potassium and should be applied in two split doses.
Inter Care of Plants
It is important for jasmine cultivation to weeding and strengthening of irrigation channels and bunds.The first weeding should be done 20-25 days after planting and subsequent weeding are done once in 2-3 months.
Pruning
For jasmine cultivation pruning is so important. Basic training should be done over pruning.when winter approaching the bushes start to shed the leaves.To promote good flowering water is withheld to the bushes in the 2nd fortnight of November which throws the plant to rest and shed the leaves. The plants are defoliated. The bushes are trimmed back to half the height and dead branches are removed in January.during pruning the dead branches and old stems are removed.
After growing jasmine plant flowering commences after six months.Fully developed unopened flower buds should be picked in the early morning i.e., before sun rise.
